        of two endemic species of <hi rend="italic"
        style="typo_Italique">Salvia</hi> from Türkiye is presented. The names
        of <hi rend="italic" style="typo_Italique">S. smyrnaea</hi> Boiss. and
        <hi rend="italic" style="typo_Italique">S. eriophora</hi> Boiss. &amp;
        Kotschy ex Boiss. are inadvertently lectotypified, and therefore,
        require second-step lectotypification. The designated lectotypes of
        <hi rend="italic" style="typo_Italique">S. smyrnaea</hi> and <hi
        rend="italic" style="typo_Italique">S. eriophora</hi> are housed at
        the Geneva herbarium from the Boissier collection.</p>

        typification de deux espèces endémiques de Salvia de Türkiye est
        présentée. Les noms de <hi rend="italic" style="typo_Italique">S.
        smyrnaea</hi> Boiss. et <hi rend="italic" style="typo_Italique">S.
        eriophora </hi>Boiss. &amp; Kotschy ex Boiss. ont été inopinément
        lectotypifiés et nécessitent donc une nouvelle lectotypification. Les
        lectotypes désignés pour <hi rend="italic" style="typo_Italique">S.
        smyrnaea </hi>et <hi rend="italic" style="typo_Italique">S.
        eriophora</hi> sont conservés à l’herbier de Genève dans la collection
        Boissier.</p>

          type="taxonomy"><tp:taxon-name><jats:italic><tp:taxon-name-part
          reg="Salvia"
          taxon-name-part-type="genus">Salvia</tp:taxon-name-part></jats:italic></tp:taxon-name></term>
          L. is the largest one in the family <term n="2"
          type="taxonomy"><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part reg="Lamiaceae"
          taxon-name-part-type="family">Lamiaceae</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></term>
          having nearly 1 000 species that are really diverse and worldwide
          distributed (<ref target="#_idTextAnchor032" type="bibl">Walker
          &amp; Sytsma 2007</ref>; <ref target="#_idTextAnchor026"
          type="bibl">Rose et al. 2021</ref>; <ref target="#_idTextAnchor006"
          type="bibl">Celep &amp; Doğan 2023</ref>; <ref
          target="#_idTextAnchor024" type="bibl">POWO 2025</ref>). The genus
          has its main center of species diversity in Central and South
          America, southwestern Asia and the Mediterranean region, and Eastern
          Asia (<ref target="#_idTextAnchor032" type="bibl">Walker &amp;
          Sytsma 2007)</ref>. <ref target="#_idTextAnchor011"
          type="bibl">Etlinger (1777)</ref> published the first botanical
          monograph on <term n="3"
          type="taxonomy"><tp:taxon-name><jats:italic><tp:taxon-name-part
          reg="Salvia"
          taxon-name-part-type="genus">Salvia</tp:taxon-name-part></jats:italic></tp:taxon-name></term>
          and recognized 49 species. The first infrageneric classification of
          the genus was made by <ref target="#_idTextAnchor000"
          type="bibl">Bentham (1833)</ref>, based on the morphology of the
          calyx, corolla and stamen, and was later revised by <ref
          target="#_idTextAnchor004" type="bibl">Briquet (1897)</ref>. Since
          then, many scientists have contributed to the evolution of these
          classifications (<ref target="#_idTextAnchor022"
          type="bibl">Pobedimova 1954</ref>; <ref target="#_idTextAnchor034"
          type="bibl">Wu 1977</ref>; <ref target="#_idTextAnchor021"
          type="bibl">Murata &amp; Yamazaki 1993)</ref>. On the other hand,
          some researchers have avoided subgeneric and sectional
          classifications by describing “species groups” or small sections
          (<ref target="#_idTextAnchor010" type="bibl">Epling 1938-1939</ref>;
          <ref target="#_idTextAnchor013" type="bibl">Hedge 1974</ref>; <ref
          target="#_idTextAnchor014" type="bibl">1982)</ref>. Currently,
          molecular phylogenetic studies have shown that <term n="4"
          type="taxonomy"><tp:taxon-name><jats:italic><tp:taxon-name-part
          reg="Salvia"
          taxon-name-part-type="genus">Salvia</tp:taxon-name-part></jats:italic></tp:taxon-name></term>
          is not monophyletic and five other genera, namely <term n="5"
          type="taxonomy"><tp:taxon-name><jats:italic><tp:taxon-name-part
          reg="Dorystaechas"
          taxon-name-part-type="genus">Dorystaechas</tp:taxon-name-part></jats:italic>
          ‌<tp:taxon-name-part
          taxon-name-part-type="scientificNameAuthorship">Boiss. &amp; Heldr.
          ex Benth.</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></term>, <term n="6"
          type="taxonomy"><tp:taxon-name><jats:italic><tp:taxon-name-part

          2018</ref>; <ref target="#_idTextAnchor019" type="bibl">Kriebel et
          al. 2019)</ref>.</p>

          <p style="txt_Normal">As part of ongoing studies on the taxonomy of
          the genus <term n="10"
          type="taxonomy"><tp:taxon-name><jats:italic><tp:taxon-name-part
          reg="Salvia"
          taxon-name-part-type="genus">Salvia</tp:taxon-name-part></jats:italic>
          ‌<tp:taxon-name-part
          taxon-name-part-type="scientificNameAuthorship">(<ref
          target="#_idTextAnchor029" type="bibl">Tavilla
          2025)</ref></tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></term>, the species
          <term n="11" type="taxonomy"><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part
          reg="Salvia"
          taxon-name-part-type="genus"><jats:italic>S.</jats:italic></tp:taxon-name-part>
          <jats:italic><tp:taxon-name-part reg="smyrnaea"
          taxon-name-part-type="specificEpithet">smyrnaea</tp:taxon-name-part></jats:italic></tp:taxon-name></term>
          and <term n="12" type="taxonomy"><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part
          reg="Salvia"
          taxon-name-part-type="genus"><jats:italic>S.</jats:italic></tp:taxon-name-part>
          <jats:italic><tp:taxon-name-part reg="eriophora"
          taxon-name-part-type="specificEpithet">eriophora</tp:taxon-name-part></jats:italic></tp:taxon-name></term>
          are revised from a nomenclatural point of view. These two species
          are listed in the <term n="13"
          type="taxonomy"><tp:taxon-name><jats:italic><tp:taxon-name-part
          reg="Flora"
          taxon-name-part-type="genus">Flora</tp:taxon-name-part></jats:italic></tp:taxon-name></term>
          of Turkey <hi rend="italic" style="typo_Italique">and East Aegean
          Islands</hi> (<ref target="#_idTextAnchor014" type="bibl">Hedge
          1982)</ref>, and Hedge indicated a holotype for each taxon. This
          statement should be interpreted as inadvertent lectotypification
          (<ref target="#_idTextAnchor023" type="bibl">Prado et al.
          2015</ref>). Therefore, a second-step lectotypification for these
          two names is required in order to designate a single lectotype (Art.
          9.17; <ref target="#_idTextAnchor031" type="bibl">Turland et al.
          2018</ref>, hereafter ICN).</p>

                  sp. forests, around the summit of Nif mountain, in gravelly
                  places at an altitude of 900-1510 m (<ref
                  target="#_idTextAnchor005" type="bibl">Celep 2010</ref>;
                  Celep <hi rend="italic" style="typo_Italique">et
                  al.</hi><ref target="#_idTextAnchor007"
                  type="bibl">2011)</ref>. According to <ref
                  target="#_idTextAnchor006" type="bibl">Celep &amp; Doğan
                  (2023)</ref>, the conservation status of <term n="22"
                  type="taxonomy"><tp:taxon-name><jats:italic><tp:taxon-name-part
                  reg="Salvia"
                  taxon-name-part-type="genus">S.</tp:taxon-name-part>
                  ‌<tp:taxon-name-part reg="smyrnaea"
                  taxon-name-part-type="specificEpithet">smyrnaea</tp:taxon-name-part></jats:italic></tp:taxon-name></term>
                  is assigned as Endangered (EN) based on <ref
                  target="#_idTextAnchor016" type="bibl">IUCN (2022)</ref>
                  criteria.</p>

                  novarum</hi>. In the protologue, <term n="25"
                  type="taxonomy"><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part
                  reg="Boissier"
                  taxon-name-part-type="genus">Boissier</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></term>
                  indicated “Tartali ad orientem Smyrnae” as the habitat where
                  the species was collected. Today, this area corresponds to
                  Nif Mountain between the Torbalı and Kemalpaşa districts of
                  İzmir. Based on herbarium searches, we found four herbarium
                  sheets (<ref
                  target="http://www.ville-ge.ch/musinfo/bd/cjb/chg/result.php?type_search=advanced&amp;barcode=G00156010">G00156010</ref>,
                  <ref
                  target="http://www.ville-ge.ch/musinfo/bd/cjb/chg/result.php?type_search=advanced&amp;barcode=G00085141">G00085141</ref>,
                  <ref
                  target="http://www.ville-ge.ch/musinfo/bd/cjb/chg/result.php?type_search=advanced&amp;barcode=G00085166">G00085166</ref>,
                  <ref
                  target="http://www.ville-ge.ch/musinfo/bd/cjb/chg/result.php?type_search=advanced&amp;barcode=G00435332">G00435332</ref>)
                  in Geneva herbarium, which is typically the herbarium where
                  <term n="26"
                  type="taxonomy"><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part
                  reg="Boissier"
                  taxon-name-part-type="genus">Boissier</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></term>
                  type material is stored (<ref target="#_idTextAnchor027"
                  type="bibl">Stafleu &amp; Cowan 1976).</ref> Among them, one
                  sheet (<ref
                  target="http://www.ville-ge.ch/musinfo/bd/cjb/chg/result.php?type_search=advanced&amp;barcode=G00156010">G00156010</ref>)
                  belongs to the G-BOIS collection. Moreover, several
                  duplicates were found in other herbaria, such as GH, HBG,
                  JE, K, LE, M, MW, NY, P and US (herbarium acronyms follow
                  <ref target="#_idTextAnchor030" type="bibl">Thiers
                  2025)</ref>. The specimens housed in G that are labelled
                  with a “Typus” red label typically indicate that the
                  material has not been published as specifically designated.
                  While other specimens in different herbaria are recognized
                  as isotypes, these herbarium sheets often bear a yellow
                  abbreviated label “Herb. E. <term n="27"
                  type="taxonomy"><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part
                  reg="Boissier"
                  taxon-name-part-type="genus">Boissier</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></term>,
                  <term n="28"
                  type="taxonomy"><tp:taxon-name><jats:italic><tp:taxon-name-part
                  reg="Salvia"
                  taxon-name-part-type="genus">Salvia</tp:taxon-name-part>
                  ‌<tp:taxon-name-part reg="smyrnaea"
                  taxon-name-part-type="specificEpithet">smyrnaea</tp:taxon-name-part></jats:italic>

                  <p style="txt_Normal"><ref target="#_idTextAnchor014"
                  type="bibl">Hedge (1982)</ref> carried out an inadvertent
                  lectotypification due to the statement “type” which can be
                  considered a valid type designation and should be corrected
                  under lectotype according to Art. 7.11 of ICN. However,
                  there are several specimens in G which is the herbarium
                  reported by <ref target="#_idTextAnchor014"
                  type="bibl">Hedge (1982)</ref>. Therefore, a second-step
                  lectotypification is needed to clarify the name of <term
                  n="29"
                  type="taxonomy"><tp:taxon-name><jats:italic><tp:taxon-name-part
                  reg="Salvia"
                  taxon-name-part-type="genus">S.</tp:taxon-name-part>
                  ‌<tp:taxon-name-part reg="smyrnaea"
                  taxon-name-part-type="specificEpithet">smyrnaea</tp:taxon-name-part></jats:italic></tp:taxon-name></term>
                  and designate a single lectotype (Art. 9.17). According to
                  the label on the <ref
                  target="http://www.ville-ge.ch/musinfo/bd/cjb/chg/result.php?type_search=advanced&amp;barcode=G00085141">G00085141</ref>
                  specimen, Hedge revised this one, which is part of the
                  syntypes but is not found in Boissier’s herbarium.
                  Therefore, we prefer to designate the G-BOIS specimen as a
                  lectotype, which represents a well-preserved specimen of the
                  species that displays all the diagnostic morphological
                  features needed for the identification of the species, such
                  as leaves mostly basal, ovate-oblong to oblong, flowering
                  stems glandular below, calyx upper lip clearly 3-dentate,
                  corolla with subequal lips. Therefore, it corresponds to the
                  current application of the name (<ref
                  target="#_idTextAnchor014" type="bibl">Hedge
                  1982)</ref>.</p>

                  <head style="T_1" subtype="level1">Distribution and
                  ecology</head>

                  <p style="txt_Normal">The native range of this very rare
                  endemic species is central and southern Türkiye, growing on
                  rocky limestone slopes and high mountain steppe at an
                  altitude of 1525-1880 m (<ref target="#_idTextAnchor014"
                  type="bibl">Hedge 1982</ref>; <ref
                  target="#_idTextAnchor024" type="bibl">POWO 2025</ref>).
                  However, at present, this species could not be collected
                  from the <hi rend="italic" style="typo_Italique">locus
                  classicus</hi> (C5 Adana/Niğde, central southern Türkiye)
                  due to uncertainty regarding the locality. Later, it was
                  found at the second locality by P. H. Davis (<ref
                  target="#_idTextAnchor014" type="bibl">Hedge 1982)</ref>
                  that this species is naturally distributed only in the high
                  mountain steppe in the pass (at an altitude of 1850-1880 m)
                  between Pınarbaşı and Gürün in Kayseri/Sivas, with only a
                  limited number of individuals. In this area, individuals
                  have to survive under the pressure of overgrazing and road
                  construction activities (<ref target="#_idTextAnchor018"
                  type="bibl">Kahraman et al. 2012)</ref>. According to <ref
                  target="#_idTextAnchor016" type="bibl">IUCN (2022)</ref>
                  criteria, this species can be classified as Critically
                  Endangered (<ref target="#_idTextAnchor018"
                  type="bibl">Kahraman et al. 2012</ref>; <ref
                  target="#_idTextAnchor006" type="bibl">Celep &amp; Doğan
                  2023)</ref>.</p>

                  determined the material and described several new species to
                  science, frequently relying solely on Kotschy’s specimens

                  2020)</ref>. <term n="35"
                  type="taxonomy"><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part
                  reg="Boissier"
                  taxon-name-part-type="genus">Boissier</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></term>
                  indicated “Hab. ab Jool Baatch ad radices montis Allahdagh
                  Ciliciae 5000’ (Ky. 229!)”, which means he particularly
                  observed the specimen numbered 229 from the Kotschy
                  collection, and it can be considered original material.
                  However, <ref target="#_idTextAnchor014" type="bibl">Hedge
                  (1982)</ref> used the term holotype (“holo. G”) that must be
                  corrected to lectotype. Due to the occurrence of three
                  herbarium sheets with the same labels in G (<ref
                  target="http://www.ville-ge.ch/musinfo/bd/cjb/chg/result.php?type_search=advanced&amp;barcode=G00085150">G00085150</ref>,
                  <ref
                  target="http://www.ville-ge.ch/musinfo/bd/cjb/chg/result.php?type_search=advanced&amp;barcode=G00156025">G00156025</ref>,
                  <ref
                  target="http://www.ville-ge.ch/musinfo/bd/cjb/chg/result.php?type_search=advanced&amp;barcode=G00446594">G00446594</ref>),
                  a second-step lectotype is required to designate a single
                  specimen. Additionally, several duplicates of the original
                  material were found in the B, BM, JE, K, L, MW, P, and S
                  herbaria. The specimens in the G herbarium bear the typical
                  red label with the word “Typus”, while the other syntypes,
                  deposited in the herbaria BM, P, and S, refer to the type
                  collection. Only the specimen deposited in the MW herbarium
                  bears a modern label with the word “isolectotypus” but does
                  not refere to any bibliographic source where a
                  lectotypification could have been performed. Therefore, to
                  the best of our knowledge, this name remains inadvertently
                  typified according to the ICN articles. The sheet <ref
                  target="http://www.ville-ge.ch/musinfo/bd/cjb/chg/result.php?type_search=advanced&amp;barcode=G00156025">G00156025</ref>
                  from the <term n="36"
                  type="taxonomy"><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part
                  reg="Boissier"
                  taxon-name-part-type="genus">Boissier</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></term>
                  collection is chosen here as second-step lectotype. It
                  includes a label with the number 229; therefore, it is in
                  accordance with the protologue reference. Furthermore, the
                  selected specimen shows the main morphological features of
                  <term n="37"
                  type="taxonomy"><tp:taxon-name><jats:italic><tp:taxon-name-part
                  reg="Salvia"
                  taxon-name-part-type="genus">S.</tp:taxon-name-part>
                  ‌<tp:taxon-name-part reg="eriophora"
                  taxon-name-part-type="specificEpithet">eriophora</tp:taxon-name-part></jats:italic></tp:taxon-name></term>:
                  stems densely arachnoid-lanate above; leaves linear-oblong,
                  calyx tubular-campanulate, teeth long-subulate, corolla
                  lobes not widely diverging, tube straight, upper lip
                  straight. Thus, it confirms the current application of the
                  name (<ref target="#_idTextAnchor014" type="bibl">Hedge
                  1982)</ref>.</p>
